Electrical Systems Inspection

Electrical systems play a key role in a home unit and should, therefore, be treated with a lot of care.

These systems can become hazardous and result in deaths and destruction of property.. As a result, safety is key when handling electrical systems during installation, maintenance, and inspection as well.

An electrical inspection offers a comprehensive assessment of the electrical system in the house, making sure that the electrical wiring and components such as appliances meet the legal safety standards. This inspection process is also referred to an electrical safety inspection because of its nature.

An electrical inspection process is carried out by qualified professionals. These professionals are tasked with investigating the different electrical parameters against the minimum allowed standards.

These inspectors ensure that all legal safety standards are met. A report is then prepared and handed to the client giving detailed findings and a highlight of the areas that require any immediate attention. The inspectors also make recommendations for improvements, as well as areas that require possible upgrades.

It is advisable to carry out an electrical inspection several times during the lifetime of the house. However, in order to uphold safety standards it is recommended to inspect a house under the following circumstances:

1. During the purchase of a home

It is important to carry out an electrical inspection when purchasing a house. The inspection is also necessary as it compels the seller of the house to correct any issues, or the buyer can use the findings made to negotiate for a price reduction.

2. When the house has been in existence for more than 40 years

Age goes hand in hand with the constant degradation of electrical systems. An inspection would, therefore, help in identifying the worn out or defective wires and components that would require repairs, maintenance, or possible upgrades.

3. When adding an appliance to already existing components

Different appliances draw different amounts of power from the grid. An electrical system may be compromised in a case where an appliance that is a heavy load and high power consumption is hooked on it. This may lead to surges within the system that may end up causing the destruction of other components.

4. When the home has gone through a major renovation process

Electrical wires usually run through walls. Major renovations, however, may require these walls to be brought down and in such a case the wiring has to be rerouted. In order to ensure the electricians who handled the wiring process did a safe, and proper job, an electrical inspection is recommended.

A standard electrical inspection covers the following areas:

  • The verification of the right light bulb wattage
  • The operation and condition of switch and wall outlets
  • The verification that arc fault circuit interrupts (AFCIs) are operating in the right manner
  • Checking of all safety and security lighting
  • Confirmation of grounding systems
  • Inspection of the electrical panel for proper labeling
  • Examination of outdoor electrical systems
